History

Gabriel’s Angels is named, in part for our Founding Dog, Gabriel. The children we serve, our volunteers and our supporters are our Angels.

Gabriel’s Angels serves 15,200 abused, neglected and at-risk children in Arizona through the application of innovative pet therapy. The program’s goal is to increase the overall sense of well-being and happiness for children in a safe environment and to build critical core behaviors, such as trust, empathy, respect, tolerance and self-esteem.

Presently Gabriel’s Angels has nearly 190 registered volunteer Therapy Teams and 40 Helping Hands delivering pet therapy to over 125 agencies. All services are free of charge to the agency and the children. The therapy assisted activities are provided by the Pet Therapy Team, usually consisting of a companion dog and his/her owner.  Gabriel’s Angels believes that the bond between a therapy dog (animal) and a child is strong enough to break the cycle of violence.  The future vision of the organization is to expand the therapy program to meet the needs of approximately 7,000-10,000 additional Arizona children that need our services. The current cost to train and support one Therapy Team for a year is $3,500.

Sadly, in May of 2010, Gabriel passed away.  During his ten years as a therapy dog, he reached over 10,000 children and left an inspirational legacy of unconditional love and promise for thousands of abused, neglected and at-risk children. However, his magical legacy continues with Gabriel’s Angels Pet Therapy Teams actively serving Arizona crisis nurseries, domestic violence and homeless shelters, group homes, residential treatment programs, and targeted school programs. Gabriel’s legacy also lives on through Pam’s inspirational book – Gabriel’s Angels: The Story Of The Dog Who Inspired A Revolutionand our many ‘angels’…the children we serve, our donors, supporters, and volunteers.
